Alvance British Aluminium has published its 2025 Sustainability Report, providing an open account of the company’s environmental, social and governance performance at Lochaber.

The report outlines progress made during the year, the challenges experienced and the work being taken forward to support the long-term future of the business.

During 2025, Alvance British Aluminium recorded its highest-ever number of apprentices on site and received the Make UK Manufacturing Award for Developing Future Talent. More than 20% of the workforce began their careers through an apprenticeship route, underlining the importance of skills development and creating employment opportunities within the Highlands.

The report also covers the company’s work in process safety, responsible sourcing, environmental management, workforce development and community engagement.

Colleagues continued to support local and national charities during the year, while also working with schools, colleges, universities, youth groups and community organisations to raise awareness of the business and the range of career opportunities available within engineering and manufacturing.

Progress was also made in waste management. Total waste generation fell during 2025 despite an increase in production, while the site’s recycling rate increased from 87% to 90%.

The report openly addresses areas where performance needs to improve. Health and safety results during 2025 were not at the level expected, while the company’s reported greenhouse gas emissions increased due to a combination of higher production, electricity imported while supporting national grid-balancing activity, changes in distribution and more robust data collection.

Despite this increase, the 2025 Life Cycle Assessment confirms that aluminium produced at Lochaber retains a significant low-carbon advantage against European and global averages.
