Delivering CN30

"It's time to get serious about the environmental impact of producing steel and aluminium." - Sanjeev Gupta, Executive Chairman, GFG Alliance

Our ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030

is bold and demands a major transition. Climate change won’t wait so we are committed to taking action now.

GFG Alliance’s strategy is driven by four key trends –increasing global demand for steel and aluminium, the urgent need to decarbonise, the decline of industry in developed economies and the need to be globally competitive in a changing world.

It is impossible to imagine modern life without aluminium and steel. They are the building blocks of our everyday lives – from the materials it is made of under the ground we walk on, all the way to the buildings, bridges, cars, planes and all the other everyday items that we take for granted and enable us.

Yet steel and aluminium together account for more than 8% of global carbon emissions and as developing countries continue to industrialise, demand for both steel and aluminium is expected to double by 2050. At the same time Scotland has made it legally binding to become carbon neutral by 2045.

Clearly, this is a conflict and fundamental change is needed.

With this in mind, we have announced our ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030 – or as we call it, CN30.

Greener Aluminium for growing industries

GFG has always been a disrupter, indeed ‘change’ is our very first value. It is clear we need to address this challenge urgently and collaboratively, by exploring all options, over the short, medium and long-term, that are available to us.

We believe passionately in the transformational power of industry in local economies, in fostering social cohesion and in providing the solutions for a sustainable future.

This belief guides our mission to lead the decarbonisation of our industries to reach carbon neutrality by 2030 and fulfil our purpose to create a sustainable future for industry and society.

This means modernising industrial sites that have been left behind using new technologies and new operating models to create competitive businesses that can better serve customers and the communities within which they operate.

Our unique strategy applies renewable power and new breakthrough technologies to metal manufacturing to create environmentally and socially sustainable businesses that generate long term profits and provide secure industrial employment.

A sound industrial strategy must take in de-carbonisation. In partnership with Government, customers, and suppliers, the GFG Alliance intends to lead the charge to a newer, cleaner way of producing steel and aluminium.

Our integrated operations

Alongside industry decarbonisation, we recognise that competent stewardship of natural resources has huge potential to increase carbon sequestration.
