From flora and fauna to alumina and aluminium – there is no “normal day job” here!

As part of our recent staff development days, we are fortunate to have a variety of opportunities where large teams can come together to learn beyond PowerPoint presentations. Our development days showcase our collaborative approach across our businesses and share our team’s passion for protecting the environment and responsibly producing aluminium with opportunities to learn and be part of something bigger.

Throughout the last twelve months, colleagues from JAHAMA Highland Estates, our sister business, have organised a full day itinerary to cover each of the departments in operations, maintenance and rodding. This was then followed by our Estates colleagues coming to the Smelter to learn more about the heart of our production.

The day included a visit to Laggan Dam, where the journey of water travels through miles of tunnel to our iconic penstock pipes, showcasing the power of nature and technology working hand in hand.

Staff enjoyed team building activities and a wider discussion at Sherramore Lodge in Glenshero, our Victorian sporting lodge on the River Spey, available for holiday rentals. Before travelling by 4×4 to observe various unique projects on our landholdings. These included biodiversity improvement projects, carbon sequestration, native tree planting, and learning more about our award-winning South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project, as well as the translocation of rare mountain wildflowers, and large wooden structures within the River Spey as part of our fish population management. Not forgetting our traditional activities, such as the sustainable farming of sheep, managing deer and the meticulous preparation of butchering, seeing the full journey of these delicious and nutritious meats before being sold in our JAHAMA Venison Shop in the Ben Nevis Industrial Estate.

There was a lot to cover in a day, but quite amazing to think of how the story of our aluminium starts its journey within our natural environment underpinning everything we do, and how across teams we work together to reduce further the environmental impact of our products. Alvance British Aluminium and JAHAMA Highland Estates combines a process that connects people, places, assets and enterprises like no other.

We look forward to organising more days for our teams, where there will be opportunities for staff to learn more about various aspects of our businesses from flora and fauna to alumina and aluminium or hill to plate – you can take your pick.
