Championing Low-Carbon British Aluminium at 10 Downing Street

Alvance British Aluminium was proud to be represented by Managing Director Tom Uppington at a recent reception at 10 Downing Street celebrating Global Deals for British Jobs.
The event brought together businesses from across the UK that are helping drive economic growth, support skilled employment and strengthen Britain’s position in international markets. For Alvance British Aluminium, it was an opportunity to highlight the important role that primary aluminium continues to play in the UK’s industrial future.
Operating Britain’s last remaining primary aluminium smelter in Fort William, Alvance British Aluminium is a nationally strategic manufacturer producing one of the world’s lowest-carbon primary aluminium products. Powered by renewable hydroelectricity generated in the Scottish Highlands, our operation demonstrates how industrial production, energy security and sustainability can work hand in hand.
As global demand for responsibly produced materials continues to grow, British aluminium has an increasingly important role to play. Aluminium is a critical material for modern economies, supporting sectors including transport, construction, packaging, defence, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. Ensuring the UK retains domestic production capability is therefore about more than manufacturing alone; it is about strengthening supply chains, supporting economic resilience and enabling the transition to a lower-carbon future.
Alongside supporting customers, we continue to expand our presence in international markets, showcasing British manufacturing expertise on the global stage. Through this growth, we are helping demonstrate that low-carbon, high-quality materials can be produced competitively in the UK while supporting skilled employment and regional prosperity.
Our operations support hundreds of highly skilled jobs across the Highlands, spanning smelting, engineering, maintenance, logistics, hydropower and land management. These are long-term careers that sustain families, strengthen communities and help retain valuable skills within the region.
Events such as the Downing Street reception also provide an important opportunity to ensure the voice of UK manufacturing remains part of national conversations. As discussions continue around industrial competitiveness, energy policy, decarbonisation and trade, it is vital that strategic industries such as aluminium remain at the forefront of decision-making.
We welcome the continued focus on supporting British manufacturing, creating opportunities for growth and strengthening international partnerships. As the UK’s only producer of primary aluminium, Alvance British Aluminium remains committed to championing the importance of this essential industry and ensuring that low-carbon British aluminium continues to play a vital role in the UK’s economic and industrial future.
The future of British manufacturing depends on collaboration, innovation and investment in strategic industries. We invite businesses, policymakers and stakeholders to join the conversation on how low-carbon aluminium can support economic growth, supply chain resilience and the transition to a more sustainable future.
