Your Future Career in Lochaber’ Event Celebrates Scottish Apprenticeship Week and Highlights Diverse Career Opportunities Across the Region
ALVANCE British Aluminium, in partnership with JAHAMA Highland Estates, recently hosted the successful ‘Your Future Career in Lochaber’ event at the Lochaber Smelter, aligning with the celebrations of Scottish Apprenticeship Week. This collaborative initiative, in partnership with UHI Inverness, MOWI Scotland, Ferguson Transport & Shipping, and BSW Timber, aimed to spotlight career opportunities and promote the importance of apprenticeships, while also showcasing the broad range of roles available across industries in the Lochaber region.
The event celebrated the value of apprenticeships, providing attendees with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of career pathways, from technical apprenticeships to more senior roles in various fields. Participants were able to engage directly with hiring managers and gain insights into available positions, spanning from engineering and trade apprenticeships to careers in accountancy, gamekeeping, operators, driver roles and more.
Tom Uppington, Managing Director of ALVANCE British Aluminium, commented on the event saying:
“We are proud to celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week by highlighting the incredible opportunities apprenticeships offer but also showcasing the variety of roles available at all levels, while keeping young people in the area. This event is a testament to the strength of collaboration in Lochaber, between the industrial businesses and further education providers.
We hope that in the future local secondary schools take up the invitation to attend the event. In partnership, we can demonstrate that industrial roles in Lochaber can be a positive destination for young people, as we work together to build a sustainable workforce and provide pathways for growth in the region.
It was fantastic to see parents and carers taking the initiative and attending the event. It was especially encouraging to see individuals returning for a second time, demonstrating their ongoing interest in exploring career opportunities. One standout moment was when a young person made the journey all the way from Kilmarnock just to learn more about apprenticeships. This kind of enthusiasm and dedication from young people truly highlights the impact of the event and the strong desire to build a successful future in Lochaber.”
Jacqueline MacLeod, Head of Human Resources, further commented, saying:
“Ferguson Transport & Shipping was delighted to attend the ‘Your Future Career in Lochaber’ event again, held in partnership with Alvance British Aluminium, MOWI Scotland, and BSW Timber. This inspiring event provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with the next generation of talent and showcase the diverse and rewarding career paths available across the Lochaber region.”
It was amazing to see so many young people engaged in their future choices, taking the opportunity to connect with local employers and discuss their aspirations. It was also great to have many people from different backgrounds attending to explore potential career changes, demonstrating that opportunities for growth and development are available for all.
We enjoyed the chance to showcase various careers, training, and apprenticeships available to them at Ferguson Transport & Shipping and reinforce our commitment to supporting and nurturing local talent and workforce development.”
The event’s focus on apprenticeships was a central theme, with the region’s industries offering unique programmes that allow individuals to earn while they learn, avoiding the financial burden of student loans. This hands-on approach to career development has been proven successful, with many former apprentices advancing to senior roles within their companies.
While the event placed a strong emphasis on apprenticeships, it also showcased the many other positions available for individuals at various stages of their career. This allowed local businesses to come together and demonstrate why Lochaber is an exceptional place to live, work, and build a career.
