Celebrating World Environment Day!
At Alvance British Aluminium and JAHAMA Highland Estates, we are actively involved in a sizeable and diverse range of environmental enhancement and biodiversity improvement projects across our water catchment area, often delivered via a complex network of stakeholders, partner organisations and community groups.
Here is a snapshot into some of these projects contributing to the bigger story of our sustainable aluminium production.
♻️ Peatland Restoration
We’ve restored approximately 350 hectares of peatland to date within our Glenshero Estate, with 50-60 hectares being added each year. Future projects are planned for our Mamore and Killiehonate Estates.
🌲 Reforestation
JAHAMA Highland Estates were awarded ‘The New Native Woods Award’ by the Scottish Finest Woods in 2019 for planting 150,000 native trees in Kinlochleven. We continue to manage deer populations across our whole landholding, meeting our targets in association with our local deer management groups to protect our forests and to encourage regeneration.
🦅 Biodiversity Enhancements
From reintroducing Golden Eagles to the Scottish Borders to working with the RSPB for upland wading birds and enhancing wetland areas for rare dragonflies with the British Dragonfly Society.
🌸 Wildflower Sustainability
Successfully translocated rare wildflowers from the Scottish Highlands to the Lake District in England.
🚶♂️ Public Engagement and Environmental Protection
Much of our land is covered by environmental designations yet is also extremely popular for a broad range of recreational visitors. We collaborate with various stakeholders to promote responsible access, wildfire mitigation, and environmental protection.
🐟 River Catchment Enhancement
Focused on the Upper Spey catchment, we’ve partnered with stakeholders to monitor smolt movements, improve fish passages, and enhance tributaries for wild and Atlantic salmon reproduction.
🌱Our sustainability efforts are ongoing and a long-term, iterative process, whilst developing positive outcomes.
