School Engagement in Action Across Lochaber
At Alvance British Aluminium, we believe the future of industry in Lochaber is built through strong connections with local schools, colleges, and universities. Recently, colleagues and partners have been out in the community helping young people explore the wide range of careers available across engineering, environment, science, and industry.
These sessions are about more than just careers advice – they’re about giving students hands-on experience, real insight, and the confidence to see what’s possible right here in the Highlands.
We’ve been fortunate to see colleagues across different parts of the business step forward to support a range of school and education activities:
Gaelic Week at Caol Primary School
Alastair Rowantree, Electrical Maintenance Engineer, supported cultural learning and engagement during Gaelic Week at Caol Primary School, helping to connect local heritage with modern industry.

Hands-on engineering with S2 students
Ewen Smith, Engineering Manager, and Ben Campbell, Project Engineer, worked with students at Lochaber High School alongside sessions delivered with the University of Glasgow. Students designed and built stethoscopes, paper rockets, and hydraulic scissors – bringing science and engineering principles to life in a practical, engaging way.

Careers insights and interview preparation
Lesley Shearer delivered a HR masterclass through the Engineering Development Trust programme, helping students understand recruitment processes and what employers are looking for. She also supported mock interviews alongside Grzegorz Rybacki, who brought specialist insight from IT.

Understanding our natural environment
Jonathan Hart, Natural Environment Manager at Jahama Highland Estates, shared the importance of peatlands, biodiversity, and climate action. Students took part in a field trip on land behind our Fort William site, using both modern technology and traditional surveying methods.
The visit also explored future restoration work across areas near the River Nevis, within the Ben Nevis SSSI, as well as Kinlochleven and Glenshero near Newtonmore. These projects are already delivering large-scale environmental restoration – with more than 500 hectares of habitat enhancement underway.

Real careers, real opportunities
From engineering and apprenticeships to environmental science and conservation plus so much more, it’s inspiring to see young people engaging directly with the industries shaping our region’s future.
By bringing classrooms and workplaces closer together, we can help students understand not only what careers exist – but how they can get there.
