Alumina shipment at the Port of Blyth SUF (Ship Unloading Facility)

Last week, we received the arrival of our latest alumina shipment at the Port of Blyth SUF (Ship Unloading Facility). With our alumina consumption nearing 1,200 tonnes per week, these shipments are essential to ensure a consistent supply of our primary raw material to our 24/7 operational Lochaber facility.

Upon arrival at the Blyth SUF, the alumina is offloaded from the vessel utilising our ship unloader into one of two 15,000t storage silos. From there the alumina is transported to Lochaber via rail, moving approximately 600t of alumina per journey. Transporting the alumina by rail eliminates the need for road deliveries, one rail trip would require the equivalent to approximately 20 road tanker journeys. Based on our silo inventory levels and current production demands, we typically schedule two rail deliveries per week.

Opting for rail transport over road not only enhances efficiency but also contributes to a reduction in our carbon equivalent emissions, with rail contributing to a saving of 1,217 kgCO2e annually over road.
